Tamás Érdi is a distinguished Hungarian pianist, recipient of the Prima Primissima and Liszt Prizes, and holder of the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit. He lost his sight as a result of a faulty incubator, yet his exceptional musical talent was recognised at an early age. His teacher, Erika Becht, developed a special method to make sheet music “visible” to him: she had him reconstruct the musical works from memory, effectively recomposing them himself.
His career brought international success at a remarkably young age. At just 17, he won the Louis Braille International Piano Competition in Moscow. After studying at the Vienna Academy of Music, he went on to earn an artist diploma at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where he studied under Leon Fleisher. Since then, he has performed in 28 countries around the world, appearing before audiences at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Barbican Centre.
Since returning to Hungary, his recordings of works by Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Liszt, Bartók and Beethoven have been released by Hungaroton. Two outstanding figures, Zoltán Kocsis and Tamás Vásáry, played a defining role in his artistic development, and he gave numerous highly acclaimed concerts with both. In 2010, Zoltán Kocsis praised his playing in these words:
“He approaches the keys with far greater sensitivity than sighted people… In certain dynamic ranges, his playing displays a degree of sensitivity that is naturally beyond our reach. I would venture to say that Chopin himself would be the measure of this ability.”
This evening, this exceptionally gifted artist invites you, too, on a remarkable musical journey!
