Barry Douglas launched his international career after winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. He is Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland — the all-Ireland chamber orchestra — and the Clandeboye Festival, combining his Irish heritage with an extensive global concert schedule.
He has performed with major orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Nuremberg Symphony and Staatskapelle Halle, and has appeared in leading venues from the Royal Albert Hall and the Verbier Festival to major concert halls across China, Europe and North America.
Celebrated for both classical and contemporary repertoire, he has premiered works by Kevin Volans and Krzysztof Penderecki, and marked the 30th anniversary of his Tchaikovsky Competition victory with full concerto cycles in Dublin and Belfast.
A Chandos recording artist, he has completed acclaimed cycles of Brahms’ solo piano works and continues to record Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Irish folk music in his own arrangements.
In 1999 he founded Camerata Ireland to support young Irish musicians and promote cultural dialogue through music. His contributions to music and community relations have been recognised with the honours of CBE (2021) and OBE (2002).
