He graduated as a composer and conductor at the Academy of Music under the tutorial of Emil Petrovics, composer and Ervin Lukács and Tamás Gál conductors.
He graduated in 1995-ben with First Class Honours, and in the same year he won the Second Prize and the Audience Award at the Eight Hungarian Television International Conducting Competition. In 1996 he was awarded with the Second Prize at the Spanish Conducting Competition in Cadaques, and in 1997 he won the First Prize at the International Conducting Competition of the Portuguese Radio. He has been directing all the major symphonic orchestras in Hungary and is regularly invited to conduct at the Hungarian State Opera.
Between 2000 – 2009 he has been the leading conductor and artistic director of the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra of Pécs and thanks to his efforts the orchestra has become one of the leading Hungarian orchestras.
Between 2004-2007 he was the leading conductor of the Orchestra Verdi Padova e del Veneto, and conducted the orchestra all over Italy and in several European cities.
Zsolt Hamar is a regular guest of various distinguished concert halls in Europe, Japan, Canada and the USA. He works with famous orchestras, like the Bruckner Orchestra of Linz, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg. He is a frequent guest to Basel, Merano and to other major European cultural centers.
From 2007 onwards he has regularly conducted premiers and revivals in the Opera House of Zurich, which is among the top ten opera houses of the world. In 2011-12 among a new production of Rossini he also conducted the world premier of Anno Schreier’opera Die Stadt der Blinden.

During the seminar students are going to work together with the orchestra, they will receive education in the form of lectures and individual consultation. The conductors pre-selected by the course instructor will have an opportunity to conduct the Savaria Symphonic Orchestra at the closing concert of the Bartók Seminar.

The course will accept practising conductors with a degree earned in higher education.

  • Curriculum plus a list of the works you have conducted or studied
  • One 5-15-minute video, DVD or Youtube link of a live rehearsal or concert conducted by yourself (you must be seen clearly from the front while conducting), preferably Bartók, Stravinsky or other 20th Century repertoire
  • Proof of payment of the application fee

All applications must be received or postmarked no later than 15th April 2019. The list of documents to be submitted with the application can be found under the relevant course descriptions.

The courses will start only if the number of active participants reaches a minimum of 6.
The course leaders reserve their rights for a pre-selection between the active applicants based on the materials they sent, the results will be announced until the 30th April 2019.
The active and passive course fee includes free enty to the chosen course, lecture, concerts with advance registration and other events of the festival. The course fee needs to be payed in cash or credit card on the spot, reduced by the 50 EUR deposit.
